Being obsessively external can leave you powerless, taking you on life detours that lead to painful outcomes, major life tsunamis, and unhappiness. Believe me, I know. It’s taken me more than ten years to figure this out. I’ve had a spiritual practice in place for decades. I always thought of myself as a person on a path, a seeker. What I realized during my ten-year life tsunami is that I hadn’t fully committed to it. I now recognize that my spiritual practice goes way beyond journaling, meditation, and reading. One aspect of my spiritual practice is centered around the experience of openheartedness, speaking my truth as a way of uncovering and discovering who I am, to connect deeply to my soul self.

What I kept on reaching for were external cues to give me the answers. And of course, I’d ask and get answers directly from my ego-conditioned self, which always relies on a fear-based system. It’s the way of the ego to keep us where we are. The ego doesn’t like change. While this worked for a while, it never sustained me; the disruption would show up again and again. So I’d go back seeking answers from the external with similar outcomes. Crazy right?
Healing from Within
It wasn’t until I started healing my wounds and realizing how powerful they were in directing my life choices that things slowly shifted. And, I wouldn’t have gone down this path, but my higher self was insistent. It had tried to be gentle with me, but I kept getting lost and missing the detour signs. Ten years ago, I experienced a series of raging life tsunamis, divorce, death, health issues, job loss, bankruptcy, moving…
I was in excruciating pain, mentally and physically. I woke up one day, and my entire life had changed from luxury living to struggling to keep myself and my son from being homeless. Yet what I thought was luxury living came with a hefty price tag. I had to face the fact that I wasn’t true to myself.
All of what I thought defined me, the external things in life; watches, jewelry, clothes, car, the relationship (even though I was pretending everything was perfect when it wasn’t) ⏤ started to leave my life slowly. The material gradually gave way to inner peace of stillness, self-reflection, and looking inward to see what really mattered. This journey to the soul self is where the power of life stems from, and this is when my life changed.
My Journey
Trust me when I tell you, my life was traumatic. Thank GOD, I had fabulous friends who patiently let me go through the drama of blaming. I hadn’t yet taken responsibility. Until one day, two years into my ten-year tsunami, I experienced excruciating back pain. It’s no wonder. My body was reeling from the stress and anxiety over the job loss, having to sell my home, a cancer scare, and more. These terrifying but necessary life challenges were just the tip of the iceberg on the journey to self. My soul was saying, “Nina, stop forcing, trying, and being busy, be still in the peace of your inner self.”
I fought this hard as I’m naturally busy, you know the type we never sit down! I discovered during many years of reflection that I used busy as a way to escape. And because that’s what my Mom prized in me oh, so many years ago, if you were busy, you were accomplishing something. Actually, for me, this type of activity is chaotic, and I now find this to be a false belief. It’s like driving in the UK if you’re from the US; it’s the opposite of what you know; awkward, frustrating, and illogical.”
What I Now Know About Being Obsessively External and Powerless.
I learned the Mercedes, Chanel, and. Louis Vitton didn’t give me the power to heal my wounded self — they were just another mask to hide my childhood wounds and became an obsessive, external habit that made me feel even more powerless – like a fraud.
My whys?
Because I believed people perceive me to be better if I wore brands that say, “I’ve made it.” The truth of it all is that I strived, forced, and pushed, putting myself in situations that didn’t resonate with me at all. I played an inauthentic role based on external cues that made me so exhausted I got sick. UGH!

I’m OK with being Nina. I love being with myself, and I’ve long since left the continual busyness behind.

Truth to told, your most important relations is with yourself. Your highest love is the love of self. And yes, of course, I’m still working on it all and will be in the next life, the next life… well, you get the idea.
I know we are all born with a distinct personality that works in tandem to support our soul’s mission – everyone’s soul mission matters. We each have a Divine fragment within, coded with a unique life purpose. We need each other, and I believe no one should take this next life phase alone. I had an encouraging and supportive tribe. Without them, I don’t know where I’d be. I want this for you!

After my tsunami and years of reflection and learning, I now know that spirituality doesn’t come in a pre-labeled box – it’s inspired from a soul level. It comes from your higher self. Many don’t realize that your personality dictates your spiritual approach to life, just like it dictates your travel style, lifestyle, career choices, romantic partner, and much more.
I was given a gift, learned through my 7-year tsunami – the gift of personality typing with a spiritual understanding, and I’m here to share it with you.
