My adventure with the Kindly Traveler (ISFJ)

When a friend (pictured) suggested a trip to historic Ocean Springs, Mississippi, I eagerly accepted. Even though I’ve visited three times, there’s always something new to explore. This walkable, charming city exudes friendliness, and its commitment to supporting local businesses is truly inspiring. The shop owners are not only welcoming but also exceptionally helpful.

Art enthusiasts will find Ocean Springs a true gem. The city is brimming with local art at every turn. From pottery and glassware to jewelry and home accents, the shops showcase a rich array of regionally sourced artworks. The owners take pride in highlighting their favorite artists and are more than willing to share the unique stories behind each piece. Ocean Springs is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.

A must stop. The Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA), established in 1991, is a nationally accredited art museum situated in the historic town of Ocean Springs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. WAMA is committed to preserving and celebrating the legacy of artist-philosopher Walter Anderson (1903-1965), renowned for his extraordinary paintings, drawings, murals, block prints, sculptures, carvings, and writings depicting coastal flora, fauna, landscapes, and people. Anderson’s work is recognized as some of the most distinctive and influential of the 20th century. Additionally, WAMA honors the artistic achievements of his brothers: Peter Anderson (1901-1984), a master potter and founder of Shearwater Pottery, and James McConnell Anderson (1907-1998), a respected painter and ceramicist.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi, charmed us both with its small-town vibe and the exceptional kindness of its residents. The town is so welcoming that pedestrians are often given the right of way—an incredibly refreshing experience.

The city is a haven for unique, local creations. Whether you’re searching for handcrafted pottery, local art and crafts, distinctive jewelry, artisanal candles, or sustainable fashion, Ocean Springs offers a diverse array of one-of-a-kind finds. It’s the perfect destination for discovering truly special items.

Traveling to Ocean Springs with the Kindly Traveler

As a Curious Traveler (ENTP), I thrive on exploring artsy small towns, discovering local art, sampling unique food, and enjoying local brews. For me, the allure of Ocean Springs, with its rich artistic culture and charming atmosphere, is a perfect fit.

On the other hand, my friend Leigh Ann, a Kindly Traveler (ISFJ), approaches travel differently. She’s pragmatic, appreciates details and routines, and offers unexpected wisdom. While I’m the energetic explorer, engaging with everyone and veering off the beaten path, Leigh Ann is more grounded and thoughtful.

Traveling With Different Personality Types: Get the 7 Secrets

Here are my top seven travel secrets for happier vacations with different personality types; friends, family, or even a business associate:

1. Have a Game Plan

Establishing a clear plan is crucial when traveling with someone whose preferences differ vastly from yours. If you thrive on hustle and spontaneity, while your travel mate prefers a more relaxed pace with downtime, it’s essential to align your expectations before the trip. Consider planning a mix of activities that cater to both styles. Remember, a weekend or week together is significant, and mismatched preferences can lead to needing a vacation from your vacation.

2. Balance Structure and Spontaneity

If your travel companion prefers a structured schedule while you lean towards spontaneity, find a middle ground. Plan a few structured activities and leave space for spontaneous exploration. If this compromise isn’t feasible, ensure there’s room in your itinerary for solo adventures.

3. Embrace Separate Activities

Not every activity needs to be shared. If you’re excited about shopping and your friend is more interested in hiking (like at Gulf Islands National Seashore Park), give each other the freedom to pursue individual interests. It’s a reflection of your personality types, so don’t take it personally. Celebrate their happiness as you enjoy your own experiences.

4. Value Solo Time

Even if you’re generally compatible, taking some solo time can be beneficial. Solo activities are not just for introverts; even extroverts like me enjoy moments of independence. Embrace this time for personal enjoyment and recharge.

5. Prioritize Meals

Regardless of your travel style, everyone needs to eat. Skipping meals can lead to hangry outbursts, so prioritize regular, enjoyable meals. Appreciate the opportunity to break bread together and be grateful for your surroundings. And remember to leave picnic spots or dining areas cleaner than you found them!

6. Manage Money Matters

Financial disagreements are common, so be upfront about budgeting. Some may spend freely, while others are more frugal. Establish a clear plan—whether it’s splitting costs 50/50 or handling expenses separately. For couples, adhere to the agreed budget to avoid returning home to financial stress.

7. Communicate and Be Open

Effective communication is key. Set aside judgments and be open to what each person brings to the table. Just as I discovered that my initially unlikely neighbor became a close friend, embracing differences and remaining open can enrich your travel experience. If something doesn’t suit you, feel free to opt out but remain supportive and positive.

It’s a new day, where will your heart lead you? Nina Zapala, Founder Spiritual Personality Typing

Why Spiritual Personality Typing

The career personality type of the 1940s served its purpose but now holds less relevance in this era of transformation. As we awaken to our spiritual needs, integrating the strengths of a healthy personality with our inner Divine Intelligence (our soul, spirit self, and heart-center) becomes essential. If you believe in the coexistence of our physical and nonphysical selves, you’ll understand that our soul seeks to express itself through our personalities. These expressions often appear as dreams, serendipitous moments, and life’s unexpected turns. They guide us toward purposeful, Divinely inspired actions across all areas of life: travel, work, relationships, and parenting.

The outcome?

We engage with the world with greater freedom, radiating joy, passion, and purpose. This evolution not only enriches our own lives but also positively affects those around us, creating a ripple effect that benefits the collective. By embracing a journey of ongoing self-discovery and empowerment, we contribute to a better world by staying true to ourselves.
